What is the Difference Between Carbon and Activated Carbon?
The main difference between the two types of filtration media is their surface area to volume ratio. Activated carbon has a high surface area to volume ratio.
The filtration media also differ in their production process. Carbon is made from the incomplete combustion of petroleum products, while activated carbon is made from charcoal. During its processing, the carbon atoms are oxidized using steam at high temperatures. In the process, low-volume pores form which provides a large surface area.
